IX. THE SHADE
Faceless secret fire; Hidden light, burning truth.
Mercenarium Function: When you sing The Shade hymn, choose any single enemy card in play. You may then move this card into any open space on the board, excluding houses. This does not change the card’s ownership or orientation.
Isolation / Solitude, Exile, Secrecy / Solidarity
The Shade represents being alone; when we are separate from others, we begin to change independent of outside influence. It symbolizes a period in which we must sort through something alone before returning to the wider world.
Its core meaning (Isolation) indicates the separateness of energy, in which one’s presence is unaffected by the whims of others; a distinction is made between them and the rest of the world, leading to isolation. Its secondary themes (Solitude, Exile, Secrecy) show the isolation as either forced or voluntary, and it hides an inner truth from others, protecting it, concealing it, or preventing it from being changed from the outside. Its alteration (Solidarity) transforms isolation into a connection with others in similar situations, allowing us to understand the exiles, outcasts, and hermits in all of us with a deeper compassion than before.
9s are ISOLATIONS: periods when energy is kept apart from the rest of the world, either internally (secrets, lies, dishonesty) or externally (vacations, separations, loneliness).
What have we here?
All on your own,
a precious moment, and
so far from home.
Look in these bloodshot eyes, and see,
Come sway, in the shadows
come stay, in the glade
respite from your travels,
come play, in the shade.
