VIII. AVARICE
The ascension of emptiness; Bliss eluding beauty.

Mercenarium Function: When you sing the Avarice hymn, choose any enemy mercenary that is in play. Immediately take control of that mercenary, without spending a capture, even if the chosen mercenary was played or bought within the last round. This Mercenary is now considered to be ‘under contract’ again and will remain under contract until the end of your next turn.

When you sing VIII. Avarice, select a mercenary that is not already under your control.

Dragonfruit Meaning:
Desire
/ Pleasure, Indulgence, Distraction / Corruption
Avarice represents the energy of wanting; our drive towards pleasure and away from pain through consumption, recreation, and passion. It symbolizes the objects of our desire and the actions we take to obtain them.

Its core meaning (Desire) represents the hope for pleasurable experiences that is often a key motivator in our actions; our hope to feel good, satisfy urges, achieve goals, gain money or social rewards, and feel intimacy with others. Its secondary themes (Pleasure, Indulgence, Distraction) suggests that pleasure is enjoyed independent of higher aspirations, and that it is most enjoyable when it is a momentary distraction from a long term focus. Its alteration (Corruption) warns of the imbalanced extreme in which our craving for pleasure or our fear of pain plants the seeds of our downfall; the more we obtain our desires, the less joy they bring us, the more we feel we need, until life begins to feel empty and gray.

8s are DESIRES: urge and impulse energy (lust, addiction, entertainment, emotional validation), that fuels, filters, or corrupts our choices.

LYRICS:

Give all you hold to your stars.
Form the stories of your halls.
Keep them from the cold.

I say, to save is suicide.
Falling up, there's nowhere to hide.

Inherit this, Avarice,
ignore the stone, you're all alone...
What bliss.

So do what you must; Lose what you trust.
Use what you've got to give; if justice lives,
then it's rusted shut with Avarice.

It's all beautiful, what they've made fall.
So adore, break through, anew.
A lonely light, shining bright
must have roots, or it's useless.

Inherit this, Avarice,
Ignore the stone, you're all alone...

So do what you must. Lose what you trust.
Use what you've got to give; if justice lives,
then it's rusted shut with Avarice.
